Build once, install anywhere: PWAs for cafés & trades

14 July 2025, 11:33 am · 3 min read

Tap a tile · installs like a real app

You don't need to build for the App Store and Google Play , hand over a 15–30% cut, and wait days for review. A PWA is one app, built once, that installs on any phone straight from a link.

What you actually get

1
Codebase, all devices
0%
App-store cut
Offline
Works with no signal

Tap "Add to Home Screen" and it's an icon on the phone, full-screen, no browser bar. It can send push notifications, order ready, shift reminder, quote approved, and keep working when the signal drops in a basement or on a job site.

Who it fits

  • Cafés: loyalty, order-ahead, "your coffee's ready" push.
  • Trades: job lists, site checklists and photos that sync when you're back in range.
  • Clinics & services: bookings and reminders without an app-store account.
Client details redacted
A field PWA we built, offline job forms + push. Client details blurred.
The catch (now a small one): on iPhones, push notifications work once the user adds the app to their home screen, supported since iOS 16.4, so nearly every iPhone in use today can do it. We build the prompt right into the flow so it just happens.

PWA vs native, honestly

Native apps still win in a few places, and it's worth being straight about them. If you need heavy 3D, deep camera or Bluetooth hardware tricks, or you genuinely need to be found by browsing an app store, native earns its cost. For nearly everything a café, trade or clinic actually asks for, a PWA gets you there faster and cheaper.

Where a PWA shines

Bookings, ordering, loyalty, checklists, dashboards, notifications. One build, instant updates, a link you can text to a customer.

Where native still wins

App-store discovery, intensive graphics, and deep device hardware. Real, but rarer than the sales pitch suggests.

Hasn't the app-store tax changed?

A little, yes. Regulators and court rulings through 2024 to 2026 pushed Apple and Google to trim fees for smaller developers and, in some regions, allow outside payment links. It's a win worth knowing about, but it's still a store account, a review queue and a cut on someone else's terms. A PWA sidesteps the whole arrangement: your app, your link, your rules, updated the moment you ship.

What we ship in a first version

We start small and useful, then grow it with you rather than disappearing for three months.

  • The one job it must do, working end to end (order, book, or log).
  • Install prompt and push notifications wired in from day one.
  • Offline handling so a dropped signal never loses someone's work.
  • A simple admin view so you can see what's coming in without calling us.
Build once, install anywhere, update instantly. No store queue, no 15–30% cut, no second codebase.

For 90% of small-business apps, a PWA does everything a native app does that customers actually notice, at a fraction of the build and none of the store fees.
